Question by Larry-Dietz · Dec 30, 2017 at 09:13 PM · vector3

Question concerning moderation

I received the following in an email from the site...

Hellium mentioned you in a comment on NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object on Unity Answers:

@Larry-Dietz Please, since you are a moderator read and respect the Moderators Guidelines

I apologize for whatever I did wrong, but I didn't realize until this point that I was a moderator :) I tried to go back through the thread to see what I might have done, but the thread has been removed from the site.

@Hellium, Is there any chance you can let me know what rule I violated so I can avoid violating it again in the future? All I was trying to do in that thread was help him work through his problems, and get a good working script for him.

Thank you, -Larry

Here is a link to the FAQ :

And a link to the moderators guidelines :

Unity Answers is flooded by questions about "NullReferenceException" and various compelling errors. I personally prefere closing these questions since the answer can be easily found on UA or the Web.

Understood. I apologize in advance, that I just answered another question, concerning accessing prefabs from a C# script, because the way he was trying to go about it was generating a null reference error.

I just thought that since a lot of these people are obviously newbies, they may have problems figuring out where they are going wrong, even with other similar questions. Is there another forum we should direct them to when they are just stuck and can't figure it out, and just need their hand held through the debugging process?

Thanks, -Larry

Just found the Help Room. Would that be the appropriate place for these types of questions, and if so, would it be appropriate to move the question there, as opposed to rejecting it?

Sorry for all the questions, I am just trying to figure out how to provide help to newbies that are stuck, without violating anything :)

Thanks, -Larry

The help room is supposed to be the place where these questions must be asked. However, I feel like the help room is an aberration. Why does UA have a place where the rules does not apply?

People will be allowed to ask a question, waiting for an answer without putting any effort into resolving their own problem while many other persons had a very similar one, and people took the time to answer....

You're fine. You're allowed to act like a normal user - there's a long tradition of that. You can not read the moderator rules, and then don't use any the extra mod stuff that requires 1000 points, and you're fine. It's not like we're paying you more.

As far as what the rules are for moderator stuff - it's complete chaos. I've never seen two mods agree on anything for the last 2 years. If you really want to, IMHO, move beginner Qs into the Help Room before replying. If you see a closed Q you want to answer, move it there and re-open it.

The angry comment you got is a result of this old discussion: https://answers.unity.com/questions/432710/meta-unity-answers-is-degrading-.html. Note it's from 2013 and pretty much everyone involved has since quit using UA.

Understood. I just didn't want to step on anyone's toes, or violate any rules. Just want to help people, where I can :)

Well, "helping" is another long-running discussion. $$anonymous$$ost people probably need to be directed to a book on program$$anonymous$$g, a general game design site or simply made aware of Search. Answering "how do I change color" without directing someone to the scripting reference is probably hurting them. But any posters gladly cut&paste old answers onto new Qs and browbeat users into Accepting - just playing a game for forum points.
