Weird editor lag on newest version after first play

Sorry if repeat, couldn't find any similar topics after looking all over the place for the past week. Whenever I open my project everything works fine. Zero lag. I'm able to press play and load up my game fine as well. No lag. However, as soon as I exit play the editor becomes extremely slow (takes forever to register me pressing buttons, freezes randomly, etc.) or just freezes completely for 20+ minutes. When it freezes I have to exit with task manager and restart. What this effectively means is that I have to restart unity after every time I run a scene, which is really frustrating. I'm getting this problem on all projects and it persists even when I empty the scene and only put in one camera and a light. I do not have collab, which I've read is a common cause. In task manager, memory and cpu usage also appear fine.
