Unity lightmapping inconsistency

I am having problems with lightmapping. The tree in the foreground has nicely dilineated shadows pointing away from the light source correctly. The larger tree behind though has an ugly overly large shadow that in no way reflects the shape of the tree or the direction of the light. They have almost identical settings. Any idea what is going wrong here?
