Report Queue - and its recent importance

Given the recent collapse of the Moderator Queue its seems critical to mention that the Report Queue can be accessed through Moderation Page -> "Reported" tab.

Head straight to the final page. Note that if there is Nothing Reported, the chances are that the previous page was filled only enough to cause a new page to be created but not enough to populate it. In this case the Page selection controls disappear and you need to manually enter the page number from the page before into the URL.

Users do seem to be reporting inappropriate content, duplicates, spam, advertising, irrelevance and "Somebody not being very nice" with some frequency. It transpires that a lot of these reports are actually made by moderators with sufficient priviledges to whoop an ass, themselves. Don't be afraid to use the tools with which you have been given. Delete that nonsense post, suspend that dodgy account. Follow up by tracing them through and obliterating their spam. Reports do not end up at Support.

Please be aware: that you should not Delete Reported content simply because the Report states "Duplicate" or any other reason. In a lot of cases it appears that the Reported content has already been dealt with in that the OTHER duplicate was deleted in which case you'd be destroying a valid post and ALL its Replies; Reported Content is NOT Quarantined like Moderated content - it still exists in the visible domain. Posts receive 'false' or 'inappropriate' Reports all the time and they should all be followed through fully before any decision is made. I have found much reported content that was totally verified by its replies.

It sounds like a lot of work but in reality its a lot less than the old Mod Queue and in fact feels a lot more like real moderation should; it actually utilises the user base to generate its queries rather then the Moderators having to Randomly encounter objects needing housekeeping.

BE CAREFUL not to destroy valid content. MASS DELETE WOULD DESTROY MUCH VALID CONTENT. A final note is that Provided you do not navigate away from the current Reported page, you fully have a chance to UNDO the last action (Suspend, Delete, Cancel Report). It is a very good idea to check your actions to Absolutely Prevent Loss of Valid Content.

Apologies for posting a Statement as a Question. Thoughts welcome.

To be helpful, I hacked and butchered the queue back to 27th Dec 2016.

Perhaps we can all agree to PRETEND that nothing exists before that point then it should be easy keeping on top of it from this point onwards.

I'm seeing how the Reported queue now ENDs at Dec 2016. There's nothing less than a year old. Were you trying to do the opposite? I'm also seeing mention of a "go to last" button added (from SaraC in another question,) but not seeing that button.

Using the Report feature seems pretty Ad-Hoc. Like you write, some $$anonymous$$ods are using it ins$$anonymous$$d of the preferred SendTo$$anonymous$$oderation. Also I couldn't find site rules for who/how to use it (it's not in the FAQ.) Some people are using it as a down-vote. And geez is it hard to find.

Yes that is correct. Every report that occured since 27th Dec 2016 has been dealt with. So assu$$anonymous$$g everything that far back is forgotten about we can just get on with keeping it 'up to date' and not let the mammoth appearance bog us down like used to happen with the mod queue. 'Reported' sees significantly less traffic but it was painfully apparent that noone was tending to it, probably believing it was handed to support. There were ~7 full pages of (unhandled) reports since start of 2017 but as you are aware Report queue was always broken before so we largely ignored it. It works now. The goto last is at the bottom (The two chevrons)

 1 2 3 4 5 > >>

The problem with SendTo$$anonymous$$od is that it no longer seems to appear as an option for Comments as it used to be, so it seems they are being reported ins$$anonymous$$d. OFC one can Convert it and them ST$$anonymous$$ but its messy.

Unfortunately the rules must be different for Reported queue as it has an inherent underlying Destructive property:

Here's the Example

I'm an AHat and Im totally BHurt because you downvoted me so I went and reported your Question for some nonsense. (Imagine its there in the Reported queue right now)

Now Im a fresh-faced $$anonymous$$oderator staring at....O$$anonymous$$G a report from a USER! $$anonymous$$ust be serious. Report says its a SPA$$anonymous$$-BOT pasting Advertising links! $$anonymous$$ETE...Oooo havent I done a good job :) *Pats back

Now I'm you : Oh shet, where's my 5 vote legit question gone? (DW I didnt delete it)

The trouble is that legit content can be reported and looms in the Queue with a fat and ready $$anonymous$$ETE button hanging under it for half the user-base (exaggerated) to accidently click on; but if we ignore the queue then the appearance is to users that $$anonymous$$oderators and Reporting is not worth the effort. If a user reports some serious offense it goes unnoticed and that user's idea of us is not good. In this respect is is good that it is hard to find and those $$anonymous$$ass-deleters may not come across it, but for us its a vital tool :)

Hmm...wondering how many new users understand the concept. Someone just reported a user for not reading their answer. To be fair, they did leave a comment "why aren't you reading this?" and then waited 2 days to report them.

Perhaps Report queue ad$$anonymous$$istration should come with a higher Rep for integrity.

I see your point about the Report feature - people are using it. Not to discourage, but it needs to be completely cleared to have any hope of Mods reading it Any new Mod who somehow manages to find it now will see 5+ year-old unhandled reports and conclude we don't touch it.

But the whole cleaning the site process is a mess:

o Users with <1000 rep can and should use Report to flag things. I think Report should be open at 0 rep, since plenty of full-grown adults with 0 rep know how a Report button works.

o Users with 1000 rep should stop reporting and instead move things into the Mod Q (or the Help Room, but many don't think it should exist.) They should also sometimes check the Mod Q (and the Reported Q.)

o User with 5K(?) rep should stop moving things into the Mod Q and just handle it directly. And also check both Queues.

= How much Rep does it take to use the Report Q? That list is never mentioned anywhere. To Delete reported spam, sure it takes 5K or whatever. But anyone with 1000+ could move valid reports into moderation, or clear and do-nothing for a silly report.

= Does the Delete button in the Report queue do anything? It doesn't appear to delete the reported item (I go to it and the dotted red lines aren't around it.) Why does the "do nothing and clear this report" button require a confirm?

All-in-all, this makes the site seem even more hopeless. Now not only are we not moving bad Qs off the front page, and leaving Qs baggily stuck in moderation for days (since no one checks that.) We've also been ignoring helpful users Reports for years. They're been reporting Spam, then seeing it's still there 6 months later.

The delete button does work! Dont forget you can report Questions, Answers and Comments. Only Qs will have dotted lines, As and Cs will disappear totally. They can be recovered with Undelete provided you dont refresh or close your window. I usually delete directly from the page then a refresh of the Reported Queue will clear the report.

Note that if you receive an error it usually means the reported item no longer exists.
